Grand River Antique Society Hosts Tractor Pull
By Tamara Botting The Sachem
Cole Bailey was exactly the kind of person the Grand River Antique Society is hoping to draw to their 37th annual tractor pull at Bruce’s Landing.
“I just love to drive tractors,” said the 14-year-old Brantford resident, who participated in the event with his stock Cub Cadet.
“We’re trying to encourage more younger people into this,” said Brian Wheatley, the group’s president. “It seems a lot of these (antique) shows are getting rather obsolete.”
He noted that over the years, the friendly competitions have changed from a focus on activities like threshing and plowing to the tractor pull.
“This is for fun, and for bragging rights,” Wheatley said.
Competitors ride on tractors, ranging from ones for around the garden to the ones that are put to work on the farm. The competition also includes an antique tractor pull.
“Those have to be 30 years and older,” Wheatley said.
He noted that the competition was opened up to garden tractors to allow more people to compete, “because you don’t need a truck and trailer; you can just load it into the back of a pickup.”
Besides the tractor pulls, there were a number of tractors on display, as well as working displays of antique engines.
The two-day event ran Aug. 10 and 11.
